Brad announces Mipik (beta)

mipiklogo.gifI am sure that I have bored almost all that I have seen in the last few months with my incessant talk about my new side project. However, I think the day has come to stop talking and start making some money (from the ads, not from you).

What I have put together is a web site (www.mipik.com) for hosting sports survivor pools (If you don’t know what that is, go to the site and you can help me understand if the site describes it well enough for you). On the site, you can setup your own pools and invite friends, or have a totally public pool (without the blue dye). Pools right now can only be based on World Cup 2006 or NFL 2006. However, I am in the process of loading every major league for most sports around the globe.

To kick the whole thing off, I have setup a pool for our class for World Cup 2006. IT IS PURELY FOR FUN! To join, just go to the site, create an account and follow the process (let me know if it is confusing). If you would like (and I certainly would like you to), you can setup your own pool and invite some friends. The pool I setup for the class is called “BCEMBA 06 World Cup” and the Secret Code to join is [Editor's note: email Brad for the password].

Hope to see you all in the list of players. And please remember, you could find a bug or two. Just let me know when it happens.

Thanks,
Brad

Randy and Chris forming “stealth startup” in the MMOG space: MMOrex

From Randy:

We can’t tell you much about it yet, but it’s going to empower designers and publishers of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) to retake control of the secondary “virtual asset” market. In case you’re wondering, “what the hell is he talking about?” This “virtual asset” market is nearly $1B per year, and expected to grow to $7B per year by 2009 (and you didn’t even know it existed, but your teenage kid or 30-something neighbor who plays World of Warcraft knows all about it).

The site is www.mmorex.net, but it’s stealth so, for now, you can follow events on Randy’s blog at: http://www.capitalism2.org.

Randy starts new consultancy: Risiko Solutions

From Randy:

capitalism2.jpgCurrent clients include telecom giant AT&T and a host of early stage ventures. Specialization in software and technology economic analysis and advanced system architecture.

I keep a lively discussion on things economic, financial, software, and other interesting topics on my blog at http://www.capitalism2.org. There’s a debate going on there now about Genetic Algorithms as parameter solutions for factor models versus Bayesian Networks. Just some light reading over lunch.

Double celebration

From Erik H:

[We] had a terrific honeymoon on Maui, despite about three days of cell/b-berry monitoring as GeneOhm was fighting off different lawsuits from competitors who wanted to block our deal. We survived and last Monday the 13th, we closed....$$ in the bank! Hope you agree with my chosen mode of celebration (attached).

Congrats, Erik!

Nth Power

From Travis:

Nth Power, Inc. is the name of my little consultancy. My clients include some hedge and mutual funds who invest in the software space. I spend most of my day synthesizing data from a number of sources into a (hopefully) coherent investable picture. Eventually I will have a blog where I publish my thoughts on software and the capital markets that anyone can drop by to visit.

2:1 odds on a jet by 2010

gulfstream450.jpgKevin just announced his new gig and moved the line on the over/under for a BCEMBA '06 jet to 2010.

From Kevin: "January 31 was my last day at JPMorgan. After more than seven years in private equity, venture capital, and investment banking, I am leaving to start a hedge fund. I am enthusiastic about this new opportunity."

I met with the NetJets and Marquis Jets sales directors last week for Helium Report. At $4,000 an hour, the service is a bit rich for me, but given the piles of money earned last year on Wall Street, it probably won't be long before we're asking for rides to Columbia reunion events on Kevin's Gulfstream.

After the Google guys made their first billion, they bought a 767. Maybe Kevin will just acquire the entire BravoJet fleet.

Becton Dickinson to Buy GeneOhm Sciences for $230 Million Plus Incentives

geneohm.gif
FRANKLIN LAKES, N.J. (AP) -- Becton, Dickinson and Co. said Tuesday that it will buy privately held GeneOhm Sciences Inc. for $230 million plus incentives.

The transaction includes up to $25 million in additional incentives for the San Diego, Calif.-based maker of healthcare-associated infection tests. The company booked about $5 million in revenue in 2005, and will expand Becton's presence into the healthcare-associated infection market.

Becton said it expects the transaction to lower profit slightly but affirmed its fiscal 2006 earnings per share outlook from continuing operations range of $3.15 to $3.19. Analysts surveyed by Thomson Financial expect earnings per share of $3.19.

The company expects the deal to close by the end of March.

Healthcare-associated infections account for nearly 6 million illnesses annually in the United States, Europe and Japan, and cause up to 90,000 deaths in the United States per year.

Everyone knows Ben is the President of Emery Energy. But has anyone visited his company's website? Gasification is more than the byproduct of eating too many gyros from Manhattan street corners...
