Update from Tim P.

andrew&Julia500.jpgJust reading up on everyone's great accomplishments and I feel compelled to offer my own:

Tim's top 10 accomplishments since graduation

10. Broke in a new hammock
9. Taught my son Andrew how to throw a fastball
8. Finally succeeded in killing my product here at work. Now I'm in a self-imposed job transition phase.
7. Found a driver I can hit semi-straight (but it's not mine)
6. I have sandal tan lines on my feet
5. Ran(?) a 10k in under an hour. That's 10k as in 6.2 miles... not as in SEC disclosures.
4. Went to Costa Rica and rediscovered the lost art of family conversation
3. Let my Admiral's club membership lapse
2. Went to a foreign country to fight bad guys. Oh, wait, that's the other Tim.
1. Ate 6 hot dogs at dollar dog night at the A's game - a personal record!

Update from Sanchez

sanch1.jpgClick here to see the complete photo album.

Hi Friends,

Greetings from Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. It has been some time since I’ve written and so I decided to stop being lazy. First, I’d like to thank everybody who has written, sent an e-mail or package. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. The isolation that I’ve felt is overwhelming at times. It’s something that I hope I never have to experience again. The separation from my immediate family is painful, but the contact with friends and family help keep me going. I’m down to about 100 days or so before I head home. I can’t wait.

585 miles

"Think of bicycles as rideable art that can just about save the world."
- Grant Peterson

laliride.pngFriends and colleagues, I need your help. After months of grueling training, I am nearly ready to participate (for the first time) in California’s annual AIDS/Lifecycle Ride. The goal of the AIDS ride is to raise funds to support HIV/AIDS services. I have committed to ride my bicycle for 7 consecutive days, for a total of 585 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles. For those who have not heard of this event, it is the official cycling event of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center (http://www.aidslifecycle.org).

The AIDS Ride is about HIV/AIDS and aims to raise money to help the beneficiaries continue to provide the critical services and education needed to meet the growing needs of our community. The event serves to increase awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS among participants, their donors and the general public. It is our collective hope that this event (and similar ones) will address the widespread misperception that HIV and AIDS are no longer a problem – (in fact more people are living with HIV & AIDS today than ever before, which means a much greater need for services). In California alone there are more than 55,000 people living with AIDS, and another 125,000 living with HIV, many unaware of their infection.

So…in the spirit of both trying to help out the world (and keep myself in shape), I have spent countless hours in the gym, complained incessantly to loved ones of being sore and purchased a brand new bike!

To contribute to the AIDS/Lifecycle Ride, just click here (all donations are tax deductible):

Thank you so much!

Ken row, row, rows for Gold

The Master Men's Program of Marin Rowing Association competed at the Crew Classic in San Diego this past weekend. This is the major spring fixture in the US, and draws top crews from all over the
country. All races are on San Diego's Mission Bay, a 7 lane over a 2,000 meter race course.

In the last 15 years, Marin have often placed second or third in the various age-handicapped events, but have never won a gold medal...until this weekend that is. This time, Marin's Master Men won an unprecedented three gold medals in three separate masters' events, being the "B" event (Boat average age 36-42), the "E" event (ages 55-59) and the "Club" event, which is the overall championship and is open to crews of all ages, but is age handicapped with pro rata time bonuses for the older crews.

In the 6 boat "B" event final, Marin's strongest competition was Milwaukee Rowing Club, a "Stacked" composite boat which included Aquil Abdullah and Ben Holbrook, both of whom represented the US at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Phil Henry, former world champion, and Dan Gehn, former US National Team member. Marin won the six and a half minute race by 2 seconds over Milwaukee in second place.

Update from Erik L. - Shouldice is quite nice

Operations Management Practice at Shouldice Hospital
Field trip March 22, 2006

One of the most useful things I learned in Nelson's class was that I had a hernia. Turns out I've unknowingly had a hernia for 10 years or so. Only by browsing the web during class did I find pictures leading to this discovery. Long story short, I made a post graduation commitment to myself that I'd have it fixed, and fixed by the best at that!

While the whole story merits 30 minutes and a few beers, lest I say I had blood drawn within 5 minutes of pulling into the parking lot. They never checked my ID. The average age of patients was around 60 (youngest was 19, oldest well over 80). The most surgical staples seen in a show-and-tell format was 36 (dude was hurting). Two most painful events after surgery: sneezing and laughing. Not to mention other fellas are regularly trying to make you laugh. Being wide awake for surgery and talking with the nurses and doctors was surreal (somewhat drug induced I'm sure) and finally, last but certainly not least, the nurses will kick your butt if you don't behave.

It took two weeks for the pain to largely subside and now I'm back to training my body back into competitive shape.

On the Kapture front, we're a few weeks away from launch with friends and family. Y'all will get a blanket invitation soon enough.

Former Dean Laura Tyson to Return to Haas School

From Haas NewsWire (weekly email):

tyson.jpgFormer Haas School Dean Laura D’Andrea Tyson, who has been on leave from her UC Berkeley faculty position since she left in 2002 to become the dean of the London Business School, will return to her faculty position at the Haas School in January 2007.

While details of her return are being finalized, she is expected to be back in the classroom teaching students soon after her return.

“Having Laura Tyson back at Haas will be great for the school, especially for the students who will be lucky to have her as a teacher,” said Dean Tom Campbell.

Tyson has been a professor at UC Berkeley since 1990, holding joint appointments with the Haas School and the Department of Economics. She was appointed as dean of the Haas School in 1998 and took a leave of absence in 2002 to accept the position of dean at the London Business School.

Tyson served as chairman of the National Economic Council in 1995-96 and as chairman of the President's Council of Economic Advisors in 1993-95 in President Clinton’s administration. She has written extensively on the national and international economies and on competition in high-tech industries. She contributes a regular column to BusinessWeek’s Economic Viewpoint.
