It's the cost of two drinks in New York (or, one pack of diapers for all the new dads) and will raise about $2,000 from our class. We can become the first class ever to achieve 100% participation in giving.

5. Ran(?) a 10k in under an hour. That's 10k as in 6.2 miles... not as in SEC disclosures.
4. Went to Costa Rica and rediscovered the lost art of family conversation
3. Let my Admiral's club membership lapse
2. Went to a foreign country to fight bad guys. Oh, wait, that's the other Tim.

Hi Friends,

Greetings from Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. It has been some time since I’ve written and so I decided to stop being lazy. First, I’d like to thank everybody who has written, sent an e-mail or package. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate it. The isolation that I’ve felt is overwhelming at times. It’s something that I hope I never have to experience again. The separation from my immediate family is painful, but the contact with friends and family help keep me going. I’m down to about 100 days or so before I head home. I can’t wait.

]]> I’m not sure if the rest of my tour will be spent in Kuwait. There has been talk of me heading up to Iraq, but that has not yet been finalized. We’ll see. The moral and spirits are high among the troops. Most of the soldiers and sailors that are here in Kuwait are just passing through on their way up to Iraq or home to the States. I occasionally get to watch the news on television and the politics and bickering back home are not felt here in theater. We all have a job to do and it get’s done. This past week we celebrated Memorial Day and it was very meaningful to me, now that I’m here. Despite all of my accomplishments and failures in life, the one thing that I’m proudest of is the fact that I can call myself a Veteran and more importantly, a Veteran of a Foreign War. Unfortunately, our job here requires that we handle the logistics related to shipping the equipment, armor and personnel from the battlefield back to the States. We get to see all of the damaged tanks, humvees and other heavy armor. Much of the damage has been caused by IED’s and when you see the damage and bloodstains, it reminds you very quickly that we are in a war. I’ll never know the soldiers who were present in those vehicles, but I know that they have loved ones back home who are grieving. I say this to remind you to please keep all of our young men and women serving out here in your prayers. I know that it’s so easy to get caught up in your everyday lives, but there are real people serving in harm’s way everyday. I’m sorry, I didn’t intend to bring you down, just to remind you that this war is real and by me being here, hopefully it will personalize it for you, the next time you hear people bashing our country and servicemembers.

On a fun note, I had a chance to head out on a Blackhawk helicopter mission yesterday. It was AWESOME! We spent 3-4 hours touring some bases from the air, flying at 100-125mph and 200-350 feet off the ground. I was able to move over to the seat facing the open door once we refueled. You’ll see how I was literally hanging out. Thank God the seatbelts worked. We traveled all over Kuwait and up to the border with Iraq. I’ve attached lots of photos for your viewing pleasure. The sequence begins with us taking off from Arifjan and traveling up to the Udari base for refueling. We then traveled up to a new border crossing that we will be controlling near Iraq. From there we flew over to Camp Navistar which is the northern most Allied base at the border with Iraq. We flew on the outskirts of Safwan, Iraq which is controlled by warring shiite clans. From there we flew back down to the Bay of Kuwait and back to Camp Arifjan. The last few photos show the condition's yesterday, once we landed. It was 118 degrees with wind gusts up to 40mph. Needless to say, it created a sandstorm. The temperatures and conditions have been awful the last three weeks. It’s been averaging 115-120 everyday with a low of maybe 94 in the middle of the night. It’s 116 right now and expected to get up to 121, our hottest day yet. I can’t wait to get home to that beautiful weather in the bay area.

As most of you know, I recently took a job at Sr. Manager for BearingPoint's Strategy, Process, and Transformation practice. I'm responsible for the Western region: sales, delivery, and practice growth.

What that means:

Transformation: helping companies take their business strategies, define the business model and organization structure to support that strategy, and developing execution plans to implement the strategy (i.e. we implement strategies from McKinsey and Bain, among others)

Strategic Change: Change management for ERP solutions - this includes communications, training, stakeholder management, performance metrics, leadership alignment

Friends and colleagues, I need your help. After months of grueling training, I am nearly ready to participate (for the first time) in California’s annual AIDS/Lifecycle Ride. The goal of the AIDS ride is to raise funds to support HIV/AIDS services. I have committed to ride my bicycle for 7 consecutive days, for a total of 585 miles from San Francisco to Los Angeles. For those who have not heard of this event, it is the official cycling event of the San Francisco AIDS Foundation and the L.A. Gay & Lesbian Center (http://www.aidslifecycle.org).

The AIDS Ride is about HIV/AIDS and aims to raise money to help the beneficiaries continue to provide the critical services and education needed to meet the growing needs of our community. The event serves to increase awareness and knowledge about HIV/AIDS among participants, their donors and the general public. It is our collective hope that this event (and similar ones) will address the widespread misperception that HIV and AIDS are no longer a problem – (in fact more people are living with HIV & AIDS today than ever before, which means a much greater need for services). In California alone there are more than 55,000 people living with AIDS, and another 125,000 living with HIV, many unaware of their infection.

So…in the spirit of both trying to help out the world (and keep myself in shape), I have spent countless hours in the gym, complained incessantly to loved ones of being sore and purchased a brand new bike!

2nd Annual BCMBA Legacy Event: 9/16

Dear BCMBA Students and Alumni -

We are excited to announced that the 2nd Annual Berkeley-Columbia Gala and Benefit Auction will be held on September 16, 2006 at Runnymede Farms in Woodside. Runnymede Farms is a beautiful 500 plus acre ranch nestled in the Woodside hills just off 280, where racehorses, including a Kentucky Derby winner, were bred in the early 1900's. It currently serves as an outdoor sculpture garden to display large-scale works of established artists. The program will consist of hearty hors d'ouvres, cocktails, music, and lots of networking with new friends and old. We will also have an art docent on-site to tell everyone about all the sculptures. Last, we are very pleased to announce that we already have confirmed Deans Hubbard from Columbia and Deans Campbell and Lyons from Haas.

While the class was celebrating Columbia graduation, Bree and I were having our own celebration. We welcomed out daughter Aria Shea into the world Thursday at 4:09AM. She weighed in at 6lbs 13 oz's and is 19 inches long. She is a very happy and attentive baby, and she and her mother are doing well. And yes, having a baby is definitely the highlight for me so far. Hope everyone is doing well -- here's a little snapshot of the little one on her birthday (and her tired parents).

Ken row, row, rows for Gold

The Master Men's Program of Marin Rowing Association competed at the Crew Classic in San Diego this past weekend. This is the major spring fixture in the US, and draws top crews from all over the
country. All races are on San Diego's Mission Bay, a 7 lane over a 2,000 meter race course.

In the last 15 years, Marin have often placed second or third in the various age-handicapped events, but have never won a gold medal...until this weekend that is. This time, Marin's Master Men won an unprecedented three gold medals in three separate masters' events, being the "B" event (Boat average age 36-42), the "E" event (ages 55-59) and the "Club" event, which is the overall championship and is open to crews of all ages, but is age handicapped with pro rata time bonuses for the older crews.

In the 6 boat "B" event final, Marin's strongest competition was Milwaukee Rowing Club, a "Stacked" composite boat which included Aquil Abdullah and Ben Holbrook, both of whom represented the US at the 2004 Athens Olympics, Phil Henry, former world champion, and Dan Gehn, former US National Team member. Marin won the six and a half minute race by 2 seconds over Milwaukee in second place.
