Randy and Chris forming “stealth startup” in the MMOG space: MMOrex

From Randy:

We can’t tell you much about it yet, but it’s going to empower designers and publishers of massively multiplayer online games (MMOGs) to retake control of the secondary “virtual asset” market. In case you’re wondering, “what the hell is he talking about?” This “virtual asset” market is nearly $1B per year, and expected to grow to $7B per year by 2009 (and you didn’t even know it existed, but your teenage kid or 30-something neighbor who plays World of Warcraft knows all about it).

The site is www.mmorex.net, but it’s stealth so, for now, you can follow events on Randy’s blog at: http://www.capitalism2.org.

Randy starts new consultancy: Risiko Solutions

From Randy:

capitalism2.jpgCurrent clients include telecom giant AT&T and a host of early stage ventures. Specialization in software and technology economic analysis and advanced system architecture.

I keep a lively discussion on things economic, financial, software, and other interesting topics on my blog at http://www.capitalism2.org. There’s a debate going on there now about Genetic Algorithms as parameter solutions for factor models versus Bayesian Networks. Just some light reading over lunch.

Join Erin and Yoav for Cal Football season

Email Erin if you're interested. Go Bears!

"Yoav and I are going to get tickets together. We wanted to see if anyone else in our class would be interested too."

From Cal Athletic Ticket Office:
2006 Season Tickets On Sale Wednesday March 8th!

Hey Bears Fans, the 2006 Cal Football season is quickly approaching and starting Wednesday, March 8th season tickets for new customers will go on sale for this year's much anticipated season. If you were a season ticket holder last year, but have not renewed you're season tickets for 2006 make sure you renew your tickets by the March 21st deadline. If you renewed your season tickets already please pass this email along to any family or friends so we can pack Memorial Stadium all season long!

Cal will hosting some of the top teams in the country at Memorial Stadium this season. The 2006 home opponents include UCLA, Oregon, Arizona State, Minnesota, and the 109th Big Game vs Stanford!

bearterritory.jpg

Cal finished off their 2005 season on a high note defeating rival Stanford in the 108th Big Game for the 4th straight year. The Bears then traveled to Las Vegas for the 2005 Las Vegas Bowl and defeated BYU 35-28.

The Bears return with an extremely talented offensive attack. Cal will be coming into the 2006 season with 7 returning starters, and arguably the best running back duo in the nation of Marshawn Lynch and Justin Forsett. The Bears also possess a dangerous group of wide receivers that can stretch the field at any given time led by DeSean Jackson.

Along with the Bears high powered offense the defense will be returning 8 starters from last year led by Brandon Mebane and Desmond Bishop. Cal also produced another solid year of recruits adding a top 20 recruiting class to an already deep roster that has a total of 53 returning lettermen!

Seating locations will be assigned on a first come first serve basis, so the earlier you order your season tickets the better chance you will have at getting the best seats available in Memorial Stadium. (Seating locations for new season ticket holders will assigned in early June after all of last year's season ticket holders are seated for 2006).

Ticket prices are listed below for the 2006 season. The GoldZone General Admission and Family Plans SOLD OUT last season. Family Plans and GoldZone season tickets for new customers are currently unavailable until all 2005 season ticket holders have had a chance to renew their season tickets. If you wish to be placed on a waiting list you may contact the Cal Athletic Ticket Office at (800) GO BEARS.

You may also place orders by calling the Cal Athletic Ticket Office at (800) GO BEARS, or by stopping by in person at 2223 Fulton St in Berkeley. The Cal Ticket Office is open Monday thru Friday 8:30am-4:30pm

Brad joins StarMine...odds on a private bus by 2010?

Congratulations to Brad on his new gig. Guess we shouldn't knock public transportation... it's no private jet or Porsche, but ridership has its benefits...

Forget about networking events: MUNI rocks.

Even though I really did not take advantage of many of the networking events, my strategy of accosting people for jobs at Muni bus-stops has paid off. On February 23, I started my new gig as a Product Manager at a little company called StarMine.

sm_logo_30.gifYou could say that this is the perfect company for me; Lots of Excel (ok, not that much Excel, but a little), Finance, Statistics, Data and Product Management. Everything I ever wanted.

Basically, what the company does is rate/rank equity analysts on their ability to estimate financials and recommend stocks (yes, they have the patent on this). They then take that data and create a weighted average estimate for the financials, thus radically improving the un-weighted "consensus" typically used by investors. I could get really "quanty" on you, but let's just say it works (Information Coefficient of 0.05) and people buy it.

They are a private company, 100% revenue growth rate (accelerating) and very cash flow positive (web subscription model). And yes, I did ask for the term-sheet; and got it.

Needless to say, I am very excited about the job. And seriously, it did come out of talking to a guy at a bus-stop.

Double celebration

From Erik H:

[We] had a terrific honeymoon on Maui, despite about three days of cell/b-berry monitoring as GeneOhm was fighting off different lawsuits from competitors who wanted to block our deal. We survived and last Monday the 13th, we closed....$$ in the bank! Hope you agree with my chosen mode of celebration (attached).

Congrats, Erik!

Rose vs. Lyons
Distinguished Faculty Go Head-to-Head Over the World Economy: "Is the World Really Flat?"

Informed Reasoning, spurious accusations, clear facts, and vague insults will fly when

Lyons.jpgRichard Lyons
Executive Associate Dean and Sylvan Coleman Professor of Finance
&
Andrew Rose
Bernard T. Rocca Professor of International Trade and Director of the Clausen
Center for International Business & Policy

Discuss the recent work of Thomas Friedman, Pulitzer Prize-winning foreign
affairs columnist for the New York Times.

Lyons on the Yes side: "Though I respect some of the research [Professor Rose] has done (most actually), on this issue he's stuck in the past, lost in a world of frictions that, operationally, the world has moved beyond. I'm just surprised that he would put himself in the position of defending that side."

Rose on the No side
: "John Lennon once wrote 'Imagine there's no country. It isn't hard to do.' That seems to capture the views of my opponent, and I take it about as seriously as other lyrics by Lennon like 'I am the Walrus.'"
